One of the city's best known features is the fact that it is the birthplace of former US Senator Elizabeth Dole, financier and philanthropist Julian H. Robertson, and retired NBA player Bobby Jackson. During the 2000 census estimate, Salisbury's population consisted of more than 26 000 inhabitants.
Livingstone College was officially established in 1879, as Zion Wesley Institute, being founded by a group of A.M.E. Zion ministers, with the purpose to train ministers in the Cabarrus County town of Concord, North Carolina, situated at a distance of about 20 miles from Salisbury. The college is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and it is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Bachelor of Social Work degrees.
